Cats can be mysterious creatures to say the least. This can make it difficult sometimes to tell when something is wrong with them but if you pay attention there are warning signs that can tell you when something might be wrong with your cat.
One of the first warning signs is if they want to be by themselves and disappear for long periods of time. Most people think cats are independent creatures bordering on anti-social but this is not true. Cats are actually very social. If they start avoiding you and you find them in a dark, hidden spot away from everything and everyone all curled up in a ball or looking listless for extended time periods that is a big red flag. Cat’s try to hide out when they are sick or hurt as a natural survival instinct.
Another warning sign is dramatic increases or decreases in the frequency of eating or drinking. Both of these behaviors can signify serious health issues. If you notice either of these behaviors immediately take your cat to the vet to get checked out especially if your cat hasn’t eaten or drunken in 24 hours.
Notice changes in litter box usage. If they stop using the litter box, or need to pee frequently, have blood in their urine or start licking their genitals a lot they might have a urinary tract infection or feline lower urinary tract disease. This needs immediate medical attention.
Sudden weight loss is also a big warning sign something is wrong.
Changes in their level of affection is also another warning sign. If you have a cat who always wants to be picked up and held all the time who suddenly becomes more independent or an independent cat who all of a sudden becomes Mr. Cuddles this can signify there is something wrong.
Bad kitty breath can be a sign of serious dental or gum infections or diseases, or kidney problems. Either way you should take your cat to the vet right away. Sweet smelling breath that is a bit fruity could indicate diabetes.
Cats are notorious groomers and like clean shiny coats. If you notice they aren’t grooming themselves too well and their coat is starting to look unkempt or if you notice a lot of shedding beyond what they usually shed this is a red flag that something is wrong. These can be symptoms of hyperthyroidism, glandular disorders or allergies.
Short, shallow breathing is a sign that something isn’t right.
Dilated pupils that stay dilated even in daylight is also another warning sign that something is off.
Sometimes you can’t quite put your finger on it but you know something is off and that their behavior is out of the ordinary. When you are in tune with your cat you can tell when subtle little things are different. Trust your gut instincts and if you feel something isn’t right even if it seems like a small thing, getting your cat checked out is advised.
